Your Shop Doesn’t Have a People Problem. It Has a Process Problem.

In this episode of Changing the Industry, Lucas and David sit down with automotive coach Alex DeSantis for a candid conversation about what repair shops need to do better, from communication and employee expectations to processes, training, and profitability.

Alex shares her path from working in a wrecking yard and owning a repair shop to training service advisors and coaching shops across the country. Along the way, she learned that many of the problems shops struggle with aren't necessarily technical. They're people and process problems.

A major theme of the conversation is setting people up to succeed. Hiring a great technician won't fix a shop where nobody knows where the parts are, how work gets dispatched, who's responsible for what, or what success actually looks like. Clear expectations, documented processes, and better internal communication aren't busywork. They're what allow good employees to do good work.

The conversation also digs into the language shops use with customers. Alex explains how small changes in communication, even replacing "unfortunately" with "fortunately," can completely change the tone of a customer interaction. It's a reminder that technical expertise only goes so far if a shop can't communicate its value.

From employee retention and four-day workweeks to service advisor training, shop profitability, and firing the wrong customers, this episode takes a practical and occasionally unfiltered look at what it means to build a better repair business.
